Availability and Overbooking Examples
In the following examples for room availability and overbooking, we will be looking only at the Detailed Availability screen. However, the Control Panel and Maximum Availability screens will also reflect the activities described. Also, each example will show only one room type (XX) since that will be the only room type for which we will add an overbooking.
As a basis for comparison, we will look at a day for which no reservations have been made. We will also look at different scenarios with regards to the overbooking levels and how the Detailed Availability screen will change.
For the following examples, we will be using a hotel with 192 rooms. Refer to the following table for the hotel's room data:
Number of Rooms in Hotel: 192

The number for room type XX increases by 5, but RC Total also changes! What may be confusing here is that the room class total is different from not having any room class filter at all.
The reason for this is based on the fact that a room type level overbooking does not increase the house level overbooking. In our example, the system will allow us to book 76 rooms of room type XX, but we will have to borrow these rooms from some other room type. If we try to sell more than 192 rooms, the system will not allow it (unless the user has permission to overwrite the overbooking levels, of course).
When we look at the room class level, the system will allow us to book 132 rooms of room class HOTEL. That is because a reservation is not made against a room class, rather, it is made against a room type. Therefore, to calculate the room class totals we have to consider the room type overbooking levels. When using a filter on many or all room classes, the same rules still apply and we will just add the totals for all room classes.
Example 3: Adding a room class overbooking level of 3 rooms for room class HOTEL; the overbooking on room type XX stays in place.
CTRL + F2, Room Class: none, Include Overbooking: N, room type overbooking on XX(5), room class overbooking on HOTEL(3)

The number for room type XX increases by 5; the RC Total only increased by 3 because the room class overbooking level is lower than the room type overbooking level.

The number for room type XX increases by 5; again, the room class level only increases by 3. In this scenario, it is easier to understand why the RC Total is higher than the Total because there is an actual overbooking level on a room class.
Example 4: Adding a house overbooking level of 1 room, the other overbooking levels stay in place.
